History:

The Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League (MTUL) is an Affiliate of the National Urban League and a Tulsa Area United Way Agency. Established in 1910, The National Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates. There are over 100 local affiliates of the National Urban League located in 35 states and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than 2 million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.

MTUL was founded in 1954 by a group of North Tulsa community activists committed to providing affordable and safe housing for African Americans in the Tulsa community. Since then, MTUL has become an agency that addresses the needs of families through direct impact, workforce development, health and wellness, homeownership and financial literacy, and education and youth development.

In the last year MTUL completed a strategic planning process and as a result has entered a reorganizational phase to become a social service agency that empowers the community to be all they could be, should be and ought to be. We have adopted a four prong strategy modeled after the National Urban League. The four areas of focus for MTUL are Economic Empowerment, Education and Youth Empowerment, Health and Quality of Life Empowerment, and Civic Engagement Empowerment.

As part of the reorganizational process, MTUL has engaged the assistance and support of the Williams Company, specifically Michael Johnson as the Chair of the MTUL Advisory Committee and Steve Malcolm as the Chair of the MTUL Futures Campaign.
